Sano shouted as he excitedly rushed in to the dojo. Roughly, he brushed Yahiko aside as the glimmer in his eyes sparks his excitement. "Sano?" "Ah...here you are, Kaoru." He stopped, slowly gathering his breath. "Sano??" "Quick, change now!!!" "??????" "That pink kimono!!!! Remember that one??" Sano frustatedly replied. "??????" Shaking his head, Sanosuke quickly dragged the still puzzled Kaoru into her own room. Searching desperately, Sanosuke quickly messes up her room before he found it. "Here....quick, quick change into this!!!" He ushered the pinkish garment towards Kaoru. "No question yet......come on...or we'll be late!!!" Puzzled, Kaoru could only follow Sanosuke's suggestion. Ushering him out of the room, she slowly lifted the kimono off her bed. The color pink. She liked it very much, a piece she bought not long before. Kenshin would have stood speechless if she wore it. Slowly, the door slided open. Sanosuke who's already wrestling with Yahiko over the earlier incident were dumbfounded. Even Yahiko lie momentarily on the ground speechless. Their eyes feasting on something so beautiful that it even defies beauty. Kaoru blushes from their response as she slowly walk towards them. Her eyes glittering with happiness as her face radiates a charming aura. "Sano? What's this all about?" Kaoru asked. Without hestitation, Sanosuke grabbed Kaoru's hidden hand and both of them fled out to the streets of Tokyo leaving a shocked Yahiko alone. Just before they left, Yahiko sweared he could hear Sanosuke yelling excitedly. "We're going on a date!!!!!" *********************************************** "What?? What is that Sanosuke trying to do??" Megumi flared. "That's what I heard, and according to the commotion, I think they are on a date." Yahiko furiously replied. "That Sano.....grr......stealing Kenshin's Kaoru behind him.." Megumi's eyes grew larger and larger until her face can't store them anymore. "So what are we going to do?" Yahiko asked. "We are going to find Kenshin!!!" Megumi angrily answered. When in an instant, a red haired samurai entered the room. Carrying Suzume and Ayame in his arm and back. Both sweet girls were sleeping soundly, tired from playing around with him earlier. "Oro?" Kenshin could only yelped in pain as Megumi dragged him out into the streets by the ear. "Ken-san......Sanosuke has betrayed you!!!!" Megumi yelled. ************************************************ As Kaoru and Sanosuke rushed out to the centre of Tokyo, Kaoru could not understand Sanosuke's excitement. The usual glitter in his eyes, this time however is different. His sparkling smile emitted a charming aura, his strong hand over hers gave her a sense of security. One which could rival Kenshin. Reaching the Tokyo center, Kaoru gasped in awe. She had forgotten. Being buried in taking care of her dojo, training, Yahiko and Kenshin, she had forgotten today's festival. The festival of the beginning of spring. Around them, people were all rushing here and there as stalls were all being set up around the city. Sanosuke slowly walked forward, his expectation of such a festival far exceeds what's on his mind. Kaoru looked on. She realised then, Sanosuke has never seen a festival such as this before. Being always in the dark, living for his Sekihoutai, until he met Kenshin a year ago. The great Zanza, stood among the crowd, his eyes glancing left to right, front to back, bringing out the child within him. Kaoru managed a little giggle as she saw Sanosuke's reaction. Suddenly, Sanosuke turned around. His eyes shot straight to Kaoru's, mesmerizing her for a moment. His unusual smile caught her by surprise as he slowly walked towards her. "Saa....you've been working too hard, Kaoru. Let's enjoy this festival together." Kaoru couldn't explain herself as she found herself being slowly attracted to Sanosuke's sudden gentleness. Yet the awesome presence of his manliness still prevail, showering Kaoru with the sense of security she thought she always had. Without saying a word, Kaoru nodded, her mind now totally forgetting about her chores and Kenshin. **************************** "Grrr...that chicken headed Sano!!!!" Megumi fumed as she spied from a far. Kenshin could only swallow his huge breath as he saw a very different Sanosuke. What he always wanted to be, yet never will. Bothered by his own sense of guilt and conscience, Kenshin turned to leave, his eyes painting the look of disappointment. "Oro??" Megumi however is not so fast to give up as she held on steadily on Kenshin's ear. "He thinks he can just go steal Ken san's Kaoru like that eh?" "Megumi dono...." Kenshin spoke. "Perhaps, it's better this way........" Slowly hanging his head down leaving the red bang to cover his violet eyes. "Ah.....baka..baka...baka......we'll see what's going on with these two...." Megumi yelled at Kenshin. *************************** Kaoru turned around as she thought she heard Megumi's voice. Yet to her surprise, she saw no one except a few unfamiliar faces. Yet their happy faces was telling her to enjoy today. Yes, for once, she deserved a rest. Then, she walked slowly towards Sanosuke gracefully. Sanosuke looked at the direction of the sound, a small grin appeared on his scheming face. ***************************** Kaoru could not have been happier. Already, she had witnessed a series of dance, and a few other performances. Sanosuke brought her around as though he was familiar with the festival. Yet, Kaoru could sense that Sanosuke was also participating in his first celebration of the spring festival. The warm smile and the joyous laughters from the crowd slowly seeped into Kaoru and Sanosuke as both of them began enjoying the celebrities. Smiling often, many would have mistaken them both for husband and wife. Sanosuke stood tall, proud yet could not hide his anxiousness. Kaoru stood strong, calm and charming. Her beauty already turning a few heads among the crowd. The pinkish blush on her face slowly reappeared. Following far behind, Kenshin and Megumi posed as another couple as they slowly dogged every footstep Sanosuke and Kaoru make. Megumi's head bellowed in smoke whenever she saw Kaoru and Sanosuke being so close together. "What is that Kaoru thinking!!!!" she thought. "I thought she liked Kenshin." However, Kenshin followed quietly, his mind filled with images of Kaoru. He could not understand, but with every seemingly long moment Sanosuke spent with Kaoru, the more uneasy he felt. His other side felt relieved though. Knowing that Kaoru might be able to find happiness in a person he trusted. A person he has taught his own beliefs and principles. At last, perhaps, then, he could finally return to his journey once more. Yet, another side of his dreaded this decision. For a long time, he was hoping to stop and settle down once and for all. The sins he commited were unforgiveable, yet he felt he has done enough to atone for it. Closing his eyes, Kenshin slowly drifted to a mental battle within himself until he felt pain in his right ear. "ORO!!!" "They are going into the forest, KEN SAN!!!!!! WHAT ARE YOU DREAMING OFF?" Slowly, they followed Kaoru and Sanosuke's footsteps into the forest. ******************************** Kaoru could not believe her eyes as they were being presented with a scene so marvellous she thought it was heaven. Happily, she ran in front, her hand hoping to cup a few of those lights flying around her, litting the bright smile on her face. Sanosuke stood behind, his hands in their respective pockets, a fishbone potruding from his lips. He took a quick glance behind, noticing some movements further back. Another sly grin appeared. Kaoru was still in her own heaven as she chases the fireflies like any girl would. With each hand, she tried hopping and jumping hoping she would at least get one in her hand. Yet with all her effort she couldn't manage to get even one. Tired, she sat down, her knees slowly bending down for a rest only to see her own reflection off the banks of a river they've wandered to. >From the reflection, Sanosuke appeared, his eyes still glimmering with charm and security. Suddenly images of Kenshin flashed past her thoughts. Those eyes, that smile. It reminded her of her sweet Kenshin. One who have stood by her side ever since, supporting her, lifting her up when she was down. Slowly, she turned to face Sanosuke. Sanosuke moved his clenced fist forward. Slowly opening them, revealing a pair of fireflies. Flying freely, the fireflies quickly flew towards the Kaoru, her serenity attracting them. Their light litted her beautiful face, as her eyes reflecting the gentle caring woman she is. Then she found Sanosuke's hand on her shoulder while the other holding her chin. Lifting her up, Sanosuke looked deep into her eyes. She met him with hers. For an instance their gaze locked onto each other, time stopped for that very moment. Kenshin felt tense as he saw the situation. A part of him was feeling happy, but the other felt sad. His heart beats faster and faster. The look on Megumi's face was no surprise either. In front of her, she saw a different Sanosuke tonight. One who was not as arrogant and proud as she always see. Instead, one capable of love and gentleness. Her heart swooned as the light from the moon shone on Sanosuke's face. Sanosuke slowly pulled Kaoru near him. His hand still holding her chin up, looking dreamily into her surprised eyes. "You are so beautiful, Kaoru." Sanosuke spoke in elegance. Kaoru found herself without words. She couldn't reasoned out why Sanosuke is acting so weird tonight. His actions were but a mystery to her. But she knew she enjoyed herself tonight. Never have she been so happy before in life, never before she had enjoyed so much fun in a festival, never before she was being said those words to. Sanosuke gently pulled her closer still, her lips extending forward. Kaoru felt tense, as electricity coursed throughout her body. She felt her heart stopped an instance knowing what will happen. Her eyes glittered with excitement as her body shivers in anticipation. Without knowing she was within a face length from Sanosuke. Megumi stared bluntly, she couldn't believe what her eyes were telling her. Her hand grabbing on the small branch extending out from the tree they were hiding. With a sigh, she snapped the twig in two. "Kaoru.........." Sanosuke whispered. ". . ." ". . ." ". . ." ". . ." "Tonight, I'm not your prince." Sanosuke said. Kaoru was faced with utter shock as she looked at Sanosuke. "Your prince for tonight is him." Sanosuke slowly turned her head to her right. Her eyes slowly filled with joy, as she saw Kenshin, standing not far from them, his eyes glowing brightly under the moonlight. His hands clutching tightly on his hakama. She could sense the intensity within Kenshin's breath. With but a small push, Kaoru found herself slowly approaching Kenshin clumsily. Kenshin and Kaoru looked at each other, both totally puzzled at what Sanosuke had done. "Baka......Kenshin is just to stupid in this field...." Sanosuke muttered as he slowly walked past the couple who were still locked within each other's gaze. As Sanosuke walked past them, he glances to the right. "You can come out now, Megumi. It was a good performance eh?" Megumi stood electrified, her eyes nearly bulging out of their sockets as she heard Sanosuke mentioning her name. Gathering her own courage, she stood out of the shadows, hanging her head low in embarassment. "We should leave them here, Megumi....I don't want anyone spoiling this little present I've set up for Kaoru." Megumi couldn't agree more as she turned to leave with Sanosuke. ***************************** "Kenshin....." "Kaoru....dono....." Kenshin couldn't find any words to describe his feelings. Neither could Kaoru. But both knew and thank Sanosuke for the oppurtunity. An oppurtunity both knew they wouldn't want to miss for anything in the world. The two slowly sat down by the river. Their eyes never leaving one another as the beautiful night lights dances around them, celebrating a union of two souls. ***************************** Sanosuke sat by the clearing, looking up into the skies, marvelling at the beauty of the night. Megumi sat next to him, her eyes fixed upon Sanosuke's face, unusually quiet. "Why am I feeling this way? Why is my heart beating so furiously? Why are my hands and legs so weak now?" she thought. "Saa....the stars are smiling tonight, Megumi. I think they're happy." Sanosuke explained. Megumi could only nod in agreement as for the first time, she found no words to answer him. Sanosuke kept his head high up, his eyes gazing dreamily into the dark yet enchanting night. -------------------- The End -----------------------------------------------------
