By Jen Konnichiwa! I’m Himura Yuki, 17 this year. I lived a very ordinary life with loving parents and friends. Not that I was unsatisfied with it, but when you had grown up with fascinating stories from your parents, you might just wanted a bit more that ordinary. My parents had an exciting life. My dad was the Hitokiri Battousai, Himura Kenshin, and my mom, Kamiya Kaoru, owned the Kamiya Dojo in Tokyo. Being the former assassin for the government, a huge number of people came to seek revenge when my dad was at a younger age. All these happened before I was born. Poor dad, it must be difficult for him then. Nearly 50 now, he still looked surprising young and fit, and thank you Kami-sama, he led a peaceful life now. And of course my mom, 10 years his junior, still looked as beautiful as ever. When I was little, I always thought they were the most beautiful couple and loving parents in town, and I still believed that. Yahiko-niisan, we were not blood related at all, but he had been living in the Dojo since a little kid, also told me that they had a romantic love life too. I never knew my dad as a romantic person, but when it came to love, it was always hard to say. Maybe it was in the family, my life had also taken an adventurous turn. Like usual, I spent most of my day in the thick forest in the outskirts of the town. It wasn’t far away from home that’s why my dad let me. I knew almost every path in the forest and it was hardly possible for me to get lost. But unlucky days came now and then. Around mid-day, the sky darkened and heavy rain poured down. I knew it wasn’t a good idea to run through the forest, with all the cliffs and stuff, but mom and dad would get worried if I didn’t get back. I didn’t think I would slipped and fall down the cliff, but obviously, I was very unlucky. That was exactly what happened and my head hit rock pillow and I was knocked unconscious. When I woke up, I found myself in a hut. Looking out of the window I was definately still in the forest, but I had never seen this part before. Then the door opened. Two figures appeared at the door. One turned out to be a girl in a pink kimono with blue hair tied in a ponytail, and the other was a toddler with a big hat and two funny characters written on his forehead. The girl had an ore in her hand. She beamed at me and walked over. ‘Konnichiwa! I’m Botan, Hajimemashite!’ she continued, ‘This is Koenma-sama.’ Pointing at the toddler. ‘ur... Konnichiwa... I’m Yuki, Himura Yuki.’ I paused. Then a thought suddenly hit me, ‘Did you just say HE’S the Enma-sama, the King of afterlife???!!!! Gees, I must have hit my head pretty bad and I’m hallucinating everything...’ ‘I’m afraid not, Himura-san,’ said Koenma-sama in a squeaky kid voice, ‘and I’m not Enma-sama, I’m KOenma, the son of Enma-sama.’ I couldn’t help laughing at this; a kid was telling me he’s the son of the God of Death. But he was serious when he said it and the girl, Botan kept nodding her head and she seemed to be warning me NOT to say what I was thinking out aloud. I looked back at Koenma-sama and started to believe what he said. Around him, there was this ki now, golden in color, and very powerful. I began to shiver, but this thought of little kid of the King of the afterlife was a bit of a baffle. ‘Um, Koenma-sama, why are you here?? Am I dead or something like that?’ I asked. To be honest, I didn’t feel ‘dead’, I still could breath and it hurt when I pinched myself. ‘Don’t worry, Yuki-san, do you mind if I call you Yuki?’ He asked. I shook my head. He continued, ‘You are still very much alive, but I’m here to tell you something.’ He paused. ‘Well, Botan and I are actually looking for Reikai detectives here, and we found you.’ ‘Reikai detectives? What’s that?’ confusion began to build up. ‘It’s people selected by the highest authority of Reikai, which in this case is me, to prevent youki from destroying Ningenkai and Reikai. Basically, it’s sort of a special action force directly under my orders. Is that clearer now?’ ‘Yeah,’ I said, ‘why are you telling me this? I don’t think Koenma-sama would walk around Japan and rescue demsels in distress like me.’ ‘True,’ Koenma pointed out, ‘To be a Reikai detective, one has to have a certain level of Reiki, and you, Yuki-san, just happen to have that quality and potential of becoming one.’ ‘What??!’ I blinked twice, ‘ you mean me? A potential Reikai detective? You must be kidding! A 17-year old girl who only knows how to use a sword, and you’re telling me to go and fight off some youkai? ’ I blurted out without thinking. Koenma-sama smiled and Botan couldn’t stop giggling. ‘There,’ Koenma said, ‘You know how to use a sword and you are good at it, that’s a good start. You’ve got a quick and sharp mind, that’s make you even a better detective!’ ‘Yeah! Yuki-san, please???????’ pleaded Botan, ‘I can tell you can be a really good detective... O, and by the way I’m a Reikai guide, and my job is to take the dead to Reikai without them getting lost. I haven’t told you that have I?’ ‘O no you haven’t...’ that’s all I could say to this over-enthusiastic guide. * Mom and Dad are not going to be happy when they hear this. * I thought. ‘So is that a yes or a no?’ Koenma asked. ‘Alright, I accept your offer,’ I said after sitting on the bed with the two of the them staring at me for ages, ‘but am I the only one? I don’t think I’m good enough to do everything on my own.’ ‘Don’t worry Yuki-chan!! We’ve got a team! We’re recruiting you see, so we travel round all the periods to find suitable people.’ Botan explained very excitedly. Since when did I become ‘Yuki-chan’ I thought to myself with a sigh. ‘Wait, so you travel through time and find people from the future and the past to work together?’ I asked, ‘Don’t tell me you’ve got a team of "future" people.’ ‘Spot on!’ Koenma said, ‘And you’ll be our one and only honored lady of the Meiji period in the team. The boys are going to love this...’ he finished with an evil grin. *O-oh... bad sign* I thought to myself. At least Botan was still beaming innocently, just barely. ‘And Yuki-san, don’t have to tell your parents all the details, in fact they don’t have to know. The fewer people know of your post, the safer you are, especially with parents like yours.’ Koenma-sama added at the end. ‘You mean my Battousai dad? Yeah, I think I see what you are getting at. And I hope you don’t mind me calling you just Koenma, do you? I mean, since you are employing me, I don’t think calling you ‘sama’ is appropriate.’ I stated. ‘Sure,’ he said, ‘I don’t have anything for you right now, and you should be getting back anyway.’ The rain had stopped but the sky was still dark. ‘O my God!’ then I realized it was almost dinnertime, ‘Mom and dad would be worried like hell by now! Um... how do I get back from here?’ I asked. ‘No worries! I’ll get you back in no time!’ Botan gladly offered me a ride on her ore. * Ok, here goes nothing! * I thought mentally as I climbed on her ore. ‘Sit tight!’ Botan laughed as she saw the look on my face and plunged through the window into the air. And as she said before, we reached the edge of the forest in no time at all. ‘Thanks!’ I said as we landed, ‘Can we do that again some time? It’s fun!’ ‘Sure! No problem!’ Botan beamed, ‘Gotta go,Koenma-sama is waiting. See you soon Yuki-chan.’ ‘Bye Botan-san!’ I waved as she flew off. It didn’t take very long to get back home. When I opened the front door of the Dojo, the people in there practically pounced at me. Before I could open my mouth to say anything, questions were already firing at me. ‘Where have you been Yuki-chan??’ Mom demanded very angrily. ‘We’ve all been worrying our heads off for you!’ ‘I’m very sorry mom. It started raining when I was coming back, so I waited in one of the caves for the rain to stop.’ I lied. I was a good liar when I was forced to be one. Mom half believed me, and dad just looked at me. I hated it when he looked at me like that. He could tell when I was lying or not. ‘Are you sure you are alright Yuki-chan?’ dad asked gently, ‘did you get hurt?’ His eyes observing me patiently. ‘Hai, Otouusan. Only few minor bruises, nothing serious.’ I said honestly. I paused. ‘Otouusan, Okaasan, I’m sorry.’ Both their gazes softened immediately. ‘Just don’t do it again, alright?’ Mom said gently. ‘Hai’ was all I can say. ‘Don’t worry too much, Kaoru,’ dad said, ‘Yuki-chan is old enough to be responsible for herself.’ He smiled turned to me. ‘It must be in the family, you are just like your mother when she was 17, Yuki-chan.’ ‘Kenshin no baka!!!!!!’ mom pouted. ‘This is not the time to compare your wife and your daughter!’ Dad laughed and I couldn’t help giggling. ‘Mou... I’m hungry!’ I said, ‘Is dinner ready yet??’ My parents looked at each other and smiled. ‘It’s sitting in the dinning room waiting for you.’ Dad said. I beamed at them, * whatever is going to happen can wait, * I thought, * dinner first! * Then I made dash straight into the dinning room. To Be Continue... The introduction is done!
