I don't have any money anyway) Kenshin and Kaoru were sitting in the dojo courtyard. They were talking about little things, though mostly they were enjoying each other's company. Kenshin had picked a flower and put it behind Kaoru's ear. She was smiling and laughing at something funny Kenshin had said. Megumi observed them and continued writing in her journal. She had started keeping this log after the night by the lake. At the memory of that a warm blush spread across her cheeks. That hadn't been the last night. The nights that had followed were ones spent in his arms with his kisses and his touches. She shivered lightly just remembering. A short woman walked into the dojo courtyard. She looked around then spotted Kaoru and Kenshin. Megumi made no move to greet her. She got a bad feeling from this woman. She heard bits of their conversation and one phrase stuck out from the others, the woman had asked her voice very irritating to Megumi was. "Where is Sagara Sanosuke?" At that Kenshin had called Megumi over. "Megumi-San, when will Sano be back?" Kaoru asked. "Why?" Megumi asked, her eyes narrowed. "Because I need to see him," the woman said. She was nasty and Megumi didn't like her. "Why?" Megumi repeated. "I don't think I should say." The woman said. "Well then I won't say when he'll be back." Megumi said crossing her arms. Kenshin looked at Megumi his eyes wide at her semi-childish behavior. "Hmmm I don't think it would be in your best interest if I told you," the woman said narrowing her eyes at Megumi. Kaoru took this opportunity to break in. She sensed blood shed if someone didn't step in. "Ah Megumi-San didn't Sano say he would be back by nightfall?" Kaoru asked. "Then will it be ok if I wait?" The woman asked. Megumi made a small noise and Kenshin looked at her mildly surprised that Megumi was so rude to this complete stranger. He recognized the look in her eyes. Jealousy, Megumi had no reason to be jealous. Sano loved her. Kaoru looked at Kenshin and he nodded. "Yes, I guess it would be all right." Kaoru said. 'Kenshin why don't you and Megumi go get some tea and rice cakes?" Kaoru added trying to separate this woman and Megumi. Kenshin and Megumi went inside. "What is your name?" Kaoru asked. "Obachan." The woman said. Megumi heard this and it took all her strength not to burst out laughing. She followed Kenshin into the kitchen. Kenshin handed her the pot and she put the tealeaves in the pot and began to ponder how great it would be to have a packet of opium, it would only take a little in the tea. Oi! Megumi what is wrong with you? She could just need to talk to him. "Megumi-dono, you have nothing to worry about from that woman. Sano loves you a lot and he says you're worth everything." Kenshin said putting some rice cakes on a plate. "Ara I know Ken-San but… I mean I don't even know what she wants…" "Megumi-dono, trust me." Kenshin said. "Alright Kenshin." She said smiling. Megumi and Kenshin brought the trays out and set them on the little table. Megumi resolved to at least be civil to this woman for the time being. Till she found out what she wanted. Megumi still thought it would be nice to slip a little opium in her drink. Not even enough to kill her… Megumi baka! Stop it! Kaoru and Obachan were talking Megumi sat back and drank her tea, just listening trying to keep her anger in check, the Obachan said to Megumi. "My I speak with you in private?" "N… Fine. Let's go out by the river." Megumi said. Megumi got up and headed out the gate not even waiting for the other woman. She saw that the other woman couldn't keep up so she slowed down. "Megumi I have a question I think you maybe able to answer." Obachan said. "And those are?" Megumi asked. "I know you are Sano's girlfriend, but I love him too…" Obachan didn't finish because Megumi spun around with a "WHAT?" "See Sano and I were really great friends and I don't want to jeopardize our strong friendship, by saying anything to you but I think when he knows, he'll come to me. And I just didn't want you to hate me. You won't hate me will you?" Obachan asked with a slight smirk on her face. Not be angry with her? Not be angry with her? This woman had approached her and had the nerve to tell her this when it wasn't this woman's place. It took all of Megumi's nerve not to do serious damage to this woman. "Please I think you should leave me alone right now." Megumi said. "Alright I'll go wait for Sano-Chan back at the dojo." Obachan said. Sano-CHAN? Megumi couldn't believe this woman's nerve. Megumi sat down next to the riverbank. She knew Sano loved her he had said so, Kenshin had even said so. She wanted to believe him so much, but too many had lied to her, hurt her. She felt sick to her stomach. Her whole world might be gone in a second, if this woman, this conniving little… "Megumi-San?" A small voice asked. "Yes?" Megumi said looking up. In front of her stood a little girl with black hair and brown eyes. She had a somber look on her face. "Don't cry Megumi-San." The girl said. "What is your name?" Megumi asked the little girl. "Mikomi," the little girl said sitting next to Megumi. "That is lovely Mikomi," she said. The little girl's name was hope. "Sano-San loves you very, very much. He wouldn't hurt you." Mikomi said. Her little child's voice sounding confidant. "How do you know?" Megumi asked the little girl. "My daddy loves my mommy." The girl said changing the subject. "Oh yes I am sure he does." Megumi said mildly puzzled at the girl's change in topic. "No see my mommy thought he didn't love her, so she left for a long time. And many miles separated them. And mommy wouldn't respond to anything he said. Mommy was so sad." Mikomi said playing with some grass. "It must have been hard for you." Megumi said. "I wasn't born yet. My mommy told me the story, she said it was stupid why she thought daddy didn't love her." Mikomi said braiding some grass. "Why was that?" Megumi asked. She felt herself growing closer to this little girl. "Because some lady, who mommy didn't even know said daddy loved her better than mommy. And when daddy said he didn't the mean lady still tormented my mommy, and it got to be too much for mommy so she left." Mikomi said looking at Megumi. "That sounds like…" Megumi began than looked at Mikomi closely. Those eyes… "Oh no! I am late mommy's gonna be mad!" Mikomi said getting up and running towards the woods. "Wait! Mikomi!" Megumi called. Mikomi called over her shoulder and Megumi had to listen hard to what she said. "Remember…loves you…mommy." Then out of no where she disappeared. Megumi you are going crazy. She thought to herself. Who was that little girl? She had treated just about every child in the city at sometime or another, none of them were named Mikomi and none of them looked like that. And those eyes… They looked like Sano's. Could Mikomi be Sano and Obachan's child? No of course not. Sano would have told her. Wouldn't he have? He didn't tell her about Obachan, but maybe he didn't think that was important? Well he was wrong. Megumi noticed it was getting dark so she headed back to the dojo. She walked slowly hoping to run into Sano on his way back. She didn't. She walked slowly to the room she and Sano shared at the dojo and as she slid the door open. What she saw in front of her caused her throat to clench shut. Obachan had her arms thrown around Sano's neck. Megumi made a small gasping noise then ran from the room. End Part one After awhile you learn the subtle difference, between holding a hand and chaining a soul. And you learn that love doesn't mean security and you begin to learn that kisses aren't contracts and presents aren't promises and you begin to accept your defeats with your head up and your eyes open, With the grace of a human, not the grief of a child. ______________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Internet FileZone: Always FREE!
